If you’re looking to refresh the look of your bathroom, a quick and painless way is to give it a new paint job. Even if your bathroom has been recently remodeled, a fresh coat of paint can breathe a different air into an often-used room.

A lot happens in your bathroom, making it easy and likely for the walls to get dirty and show wear more quickly than other rooms in the house.  When cleaning and scrubbing aren’t enough, it’s time to consider starting over with some good quality paint. Before you or your contractor whip out the paint brushes, here’s a list of good measures, as well as what to avoid when painting a bathroom.

DO: SET UP GREAT LIGHTING & VENTILATION

Bathrooms often lack big windows, so to properly ventilate the space before you paint, be sure to set up fans to point into the room and turn on any ventilation systems that may already be installed. Natural lighting varies and light from a fixture often isn’t bright enough to illuminate the walls for a stellar paint job. Use high wattage bulbs without shades or covers to create even lighting in the whole room.

DON’T: IGNORE THE DRYWALL

Even the most professionally done paint job can be ruined if you don’t pay close attention to the actual wall itself. Whether you’re using drywall, paneling, or plaster, be sure to fix any blemishes and even out the texture before painting.

DO: PAY ATTENTION TO PAINT COLOR & FINISH

If you have a bathroom that lacks expansive windows and natural light, try using a paint mix at 75% for a brighter feel. The finish is just as important. Satin and semi-gloss paints fare well in bathrooms because they are easy to clean and stand up to stains better than flat or matte paints.

DON’T: USE YOUR BATHROOM RIGHT AWAY

After painting, it’s best to wait at least a full 24 hours before using your shower. This will give the paint ample time to dry and settle. Even after 24 hours, use a fan while showering and a short time afterwards to help remove excess moisture and prevent your beautiful paint job from cracking or peeling.
